Meng Song Secret Garden raw Pu'er from 2013. This tea not only refutes the idea that "young Pu'er cannot be drunk" it makes one wonder why bother aging tea at all. Creamy and floral, this tea comes from a secret garden in the famous region of Meng Song, and we ordered the pressing of our own cakes right after we ate the leaves off the trees (and right after we promised not to tell anyone the location of the forest). The old trees grow in a pristine and bio-diverse environment surrounded by taro, bamboo and camphor trees, with extremely limited access.
Our own 1001plateaus ripe Pu'er Tuo Cha from 2012. Tuo Cha generally has a bad reputation because it's usually made with crappy tea. Our Tuo Cha is excellent Pu'er (picked from large trees) that just happens to be wrapped in little 5 gram pieces. You drop one of these guys into a cup, rinse once and then brew. The flavor is spicy, a slight hint of citrus and woody nuances, and the liquid is thick.
Want to try some aged Pu'er and not spend a fortune? Get an 8g sample of the 1987 Seven Sons and 8g of the 2002 Seven Sons for an amazing taste comparison. You can probably split the sample into two servings, as 4g of the tea can easily be enough for an 8 ounce gaiwan. Free shipping!
Sold in 25g increments only. Seven Sons Pu'er (7543) from Menghai factory.
Want to taste a really old Pu'er? This tea has been dry stored since 2003 in my hands. It has a slight rice soup taste, red dates, with a ridiculously sweet aftertaste. It's smooth and silky like a fleece sleeping bag. It's not incredibly viscous, but everything else makes up for it. Limited quantities, as expected.
Mengsong raw Pu'er from 2017. This tea comes from the famous area of Mengsong but picked in the fall so the classic floral and orchid flavors have been hushed by a quiet breeze. It is drinkable now, but will age into an incredible tea.
We pressed the tea in 100 gram pucks so they're awfully cute and easy to carry around.
This tea is from the Da Ping Zhang region of Jingmai, (100g) full of old trees growing very slowly, picked in the first spring harvest. So smooth and floral and crisp after tasting this I had to stop drinking tea and switch to water. The floral bits will start to fade in the first few years but it's so complex you can drink this now when it's young or save it for several years and lord it over your friends.
It's often said that the brewing of a good tea is a celebration in itself. But sometimes commemorative pucks are needed, and this is Denong's raw 2016 Pu'er (100g) from early spring picking of arbor trees, and it's crazy smooth with an aroma and thick body that will only get better with age.
So young and yet already so floral and thick, due to its source of arbor trees. It has an incredible finish and long sweet aftertaste that is surprising for teas of this vintage. (100g).
Brewing tips: Rinse 5 grams tea for a few seconds with water (90°C / 190°F), and discard the rinse, then add more water to brew, and after 5 to 10 seconds pour the tea into a separate cup to drink. By pouring off the tea you can reuse the leaves for subsequent rounds, by adding more water and gradually increasing the steeping time.
These 100g pucks made from tea trees around 100 years old are delicious now but have the complexity and potential to be even better if stored. Mix and match with the Bulang Raw to taste a raw and ripe Pu'er from the same region. They make great gifts!
